What is the Sandhills? Wedged between the Coastal Plains and Piedmont, the Sandhills is a geographical region in North and South Carolina. The Sandhills encompasses part or all of 8 counties in North Carolina - Cumberland, Lee, Harnett, Hoke, Montgomery, Moore, Richmond and Scotland - and 7 counties in South Carolina - Aiken, Chesterfield, Darlington, Kershaw, Lexington, Marlboro and Richland. The term "Sandhills" refers to the rolling hills capped by deep coarse sands which dominate the landscape. Once considered part of a large inland dune system, the Sandhills is now believed to have been carved out of an ancient delta plain. The delta was formed millions of years ago when sediment-laden rivers flowing from the mountains and piedmont emptied into the sea in this area. Stream and wind erosion over the past 40-50 million years has created the hilly topography visible today. |
